چکیده

A phytoextraction treatment enhanced by electric field to decontaminate a heavily Pb polluted soil has been tested in a greenhouse-scale experiment. Brassica juncea was selected as Pb-hyperaccumulator plant. The influence of the application of two Electric Potential Difference values (0.6 and 1.1 V cm) and the addition of EDTA (2.5 mmol kg) on biomass production, plant uptake, contaminant leaching and migration was investigated, monitoring pH, temperature and electric current through the soil. The investigated treatments were applied for 8 weeks. For the treatment with EPD application and EDTA addition, a slight decrease in biomass production, a 4-fold increase of the plant uptake and a significant Pb leached reduction compared to control were observed. The combined use of electrokinetic and phytoextraction treatments can therefore contribute to reduce significantly the remediation time and the risk of groundwater pollution, possibly representing a very promising approach to decontaminating metalpolluted soil.

Enhanced Accumulation of Copper and Lead in Amaranth (Amaranthus paniculatus), Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea) and Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

BACKGROUND Soil contamination by copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) is a widespread environmental problem. For phytoextraction to be successful and viable in environmental remediation, strategies that can improve plant uptake must be identified. In the present study we investigated the use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer as an efficient way to enhance accumulation of Cu and Pb from contaminated industrial so...

Analysis of transgenic Indian mustard plants for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated mine tailings.

Transgenic Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] plants overproducing the enzymes gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have increased levels of the metal-binding thiol peptides phytochelatins and glutathione, and enhanced Cd tolerance and accumulation. Furthermore, transgenic Indian mustard plants overexpressing adenosine triphos...

Enhancing phytoextraction: the effect of chemical soil manipulation on mobility, plant accumulation, and leaching of heavy metals.

For heavy metal-contaminated agricultural land, low-cost, plant-based phytoextraction measures can be a key element for a new land management strategy. When agents are applied into the soil, the solubility of heavy metals and their subsequent accumulation by plants can be increased, and, therefore, phytoextraction enhanced. An overview is given of the state of the art of enhancing heavy metal s...

Heavy metal removal from municipal sewage sludges by phytoextractio

In European Union countries up to 80% of sewage sludge is used in agriculture and forestry, whereas in Poland only 11% is used as fertilizer. The principal environmental concern is the inevitable presence of heavy metals when using sewage sludge as fertilizer. The main objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the phytoextraction process in removing heavy metals from sludges. A ...
